MBV: Symbolism & Meaning

What does the black veil symbolize? Explain.

What is another word or phrase you could replace "black veil" with in the story/title? Why?

  1. The black veil represents secrecy or a hidden motive/feature. A good synonym with veil would be curtain. curtains are meant to give a appearnece of hidden or mystery. curtains are also used to present a play or show or entertainment productions. this would be a more positive but still secretive synonym.

  2. "Wall"

The veil acts as a nonphysical wall between the minister and the parishioners. Its presence looms over the minister, and cannot be ignored. It also makes communication between the minister and others difficult, as his stubborn refusal to remove the veil is a communicative barrier between others and him.

  3. The black veil symbolizes the ministers shame of what he did. The black veil has made a negative impact on the people who knew the minister. Things become awkward between the minister and other people because of the black veil.

  4. The black veil symbolizes that the minister is a sinner. The black veil covering his face is a marker that tells the whole world he has done something wrong. the point of the story is that everyone is a sinner but he is the only one who wears a mark.

  5. The Black Veil in this story symbolizes the sin that Mr. Hooper has commited and he is wearing it for all to know what kind of man he is. He wants everyone to know he is ashamed for what he has done and wearing the veil lets everyone know that what he did was wrong and he will never do it again. The sin of his life follows him around everywhere he goes, and the author makes the sin visile for everyone to see by making it be worn as a veil on Mr. Hoopers face.

  6. The black veil symbolizes a guard or even a wall that he is wearing around. The guard shows the minister's shame and because it is constantly being worn, it shows the Minister recognizes his mistakes and wants the others in the congregation and society to recognize their guards. The guard is like a hidden secret, but for Mr. Hooper, he shows the people that even a minister can sin. Although he is ashamed, the veil is used as a wake up call for the rest of society, for them to acknowledge their sins. Another word I would use to describe the veil would be a shield or guard because the minister was protecting himself and his people from his sin, but he wants the others to recognize their own sins.

  7. The black veil symbolizes the man because that was a part of him and he wanted to show it to the other people in the town. I think the black veil symbolizes forgiveness because his main point was to make people forgive there sins and look at themselves of how they acted to him. Also I think it represents secretecy because no one knows the point to it but why is he wearing it and it is the talk of the town but the minister had all the answers in the back of his mind. Some other words are letter, fortress and computer

  9. The black veil symbolizes his mistake and when he chooses to wear it for the rest of his life, it is a constant reminder to himself and anyone he comes across of his mistake. It also symbolizes shame because that is the whole reason why he wears it to cover his face because he feels so ashamed that he had commited adultry. Finally, the black veil also symbolizes dedication because he actually wore it over his face until the day he died and that takes a lot of dedication to continue to do such a thing when it pretty much ruined his life. Taking it off would've made things so much easier for him but he does not choose the easy way out. -Sammi

  10. The veil which the minister wears during his sermons represents false identity. He talks about how all the people in his church are responsible for sin. The veil represents all of good sides people have when others are watching. Then when they know no one is watching they take the veil off and commit sins. The veil guards people from exposing their true personality.

  12. I know it is similar to Reilly's, but I had the same perspective:

In my opinion, the veil is a show put on for others around them. It represents the false identity that someone uses in everyday life. The veil masks what is truly inside, and that is some sort of evil or sin for everybody. It does not necessarily mean that they went out and killed somebody, but they are not perfect in any way, shape, or form.
