MBV: Impact & Reactions

Why does the black veil cause such a strong reaction in all of the people in “The Minister’s Black Veil”? What does it make them think of / feel?

  1. Minister Hooper's black veil causes many reactions in the people he preaches to. At first the townspeople are surprised and shocked to see their minister "with this gloomy shade before him." The veil fills them all with gloom and dread even on the happiest occasions; a
wedding is changed drastically just by the appearance of it ("If ever another wedding were so dismal, it was that famous one where they tolled the wedding knell.") Hooper's fiance even leaves him because she can't stand the sight of it. Soon Hooper one of the kindest men in the village is isolated and alone due to the feelings of doom and mysterious fear the veil gives them.

  2. The black veil causes the people in "The Minister's Black Veil" worry and become fearful. "But so wonder- stuck were they that his greeting hardly met with a return." No one was comfortable with the "piece of crape" over Mr. Hooper's face. It covered most of his face, leaving just his mouth and part of his nose. The people have such strong emotions towards the veil, because they don't understand the purpose of it. It causes them to question the minister's capablities and created a lack of trust. The people also, probably recognized what the veil stood for, since he refused to remove the veil when approached by his finacee, Elizabeth. The realized that he had a secret sin that he could not tell anyone. He was carrying around the burden of the sin, and the congregation started to doubt him because of his sin. The veil overall makes the people doubt Mr. Hooper's abilities as a minister, and creates fear and worry for the people, because they didn't know that the minister had such a past, or even did such horrible, sinful things.

  3. The black veil causes such a strong reaction in all of the people because they do not understand why Mr. Hooper is wearing it. It’s the type of thing that causes rumors to fly even though it is something so small. I think that the color also affects the rumors being spread. Different things might be said if it were a different color, such as green or blue. Black is a dark color, which can only cause the mind to go to dark places, especially in a church. At first they’re not sure what to think, they’re just frightened, but then they begin to think that he is has gone mad, or that there is something satanic intentionally placed over his appearance.

  4. People in "The Ministers Black Veil" become afraid of what the minister may be hiding from them and fearful of why the minister is wearing the black veil. The people did not know about the ministers past and what he had done to wear the black veil. The black veil makes the people think differently about the minister. The people have a questionable opinion about the minister.

  6. The reactions to the minister's black veil range from fright to confusion to combinations of the two. Throughout the story the townspeople are constantly discussing it and trying to solve the mystery of why he is wearing it. I believe this is a commentary by Hawthorne on Christianity or religion in general. The world is a strange place with many mysteries, and people turn to religion for answers to the mysteries of life, which religions attempt to explain. Thus, the very religious puritan community is in shambles when a routine part of their lives (the minister and his sermons) changes in a strange way with no explanation whatsoever. Religion is an answer to people, and this community panics when they are denied them.

  7. I think the people are so shocked because a priest is wearing a black veil. That is something someone who commited an extreme sin would wear. It is strange that someone would wear that and even more strange that it is a priest.

  8. I believe the people of the town are most startled by the minister’s veil because they do not understand his motives for its presence, and to them it appears to be shrouded in mystery. When he first appears to them this way, the general feeling was one of amazement and confusion. From their perspective, their loved minister merely showed up one day wearing this gloomy token of mystery. When they find that he continues wearing this veil, the people begin to fear him for his difference, for they see him as bizarre. They don’t understand why he has decided to do this, and they begin to fill in their ignorance with gossip and rumors of the possibilities of its existence. To them, he takes on a intimidating, mysterious, chilling persona that brings fear to the people. They begin to ignore him in the streets, and reject him from society. Because they don’t understand the power of what it is that he is doing, they cannot connect with him any longer, and alienate him from society.

  9. The veil caused such a strong reaction to everyone because if you picture a typical citizen in your town randomly one day walking around with a veil completly covering their face it would most likely make you feel akward and uncomfortable. Especially it being a minister in the town made it even worse because he is someone who is supposed to be religious and help guide them. The townspeople never got an explination or reason to why he was choosing to continue his life with it on and found it hard to communicate and continute to talk to him because it actually kindof scared them. His own wife even ends up leaving him in the end because she is so against it. -Sammi

  10. Mr. Hooper veil causes a stir because as a minister you are just suppose to wear a black suit but now Mr. Hooper changed it up so they are all asking why. He did not changed it up very much but he had a lesson and evrybody wanted to see it by making fun of him and laughing but he did not care and that is what he wanted to show the townspeople. They are thibnking what is he doing and he is looking like an idiot walking around town. Also it shows that people just stop and look at this situation and figure out the best way to handle this.

  12. Well for one thing, back in those times everybody dressed in a propper manner. A person would be thought to be weird if they dressed different or even if they deviated from any of the modern social norms. The reaction that the people in the story was so strong due to many things. One being the fact that most people knew this minister and he was acting completely different than he normally did. Also the fact that it was a black veil was a little creepy, although it did have quite a strong impact. I believe that at first the people didn't know what to make of this occurence although after a while everything started to seep in. The veil carried a strong messege for anyone and everyone on how they can be a better person and not be so judgemental as people typically are. The people were in general shocked however some of the people understood the underlying meaning.

  13. The church people in "The Minister's Black Veil" at first are unsure why the minister was wearing the veil. However, the people begin to realize that they are the reason he was wearing the veil. They begin to see their own faults and they must change and become more honest people.
