Title

Think carefully about the meaning of the title and what it draws focus on from the poem.

How is the title's meaning significant?

  1. The title of the poem "They are Silent and Quick," by Luci Tapahonso,is significant because the "They" that it refers to are the fireflies. The fireflies represent light in the dark. Light is a commonly used motif that symbolizes life and hope. In the poem, the fireflies were a symbol for the hope of a better life in the darkness of the narrator's current one.

  2. The title of the peom draws focus on the spiritual sense behind the fireflies. The spiritual sense that the fireflies convey is that spirits are silent in that you never know of their comming and goings. Also the fact that they are silent, they are there whether you choose to aknowledge them or not. The fact that the daughter notices the magic that the fireflies posses shows that she respects the spirits of all things even those that are both silent and quick.

  3. The title of this poem is a reference to the magic bugs in the sky that night. The bugs are silent and quick, and the narrator thinks they are magic. "tiny flickers of light appear here and there. They are silent and quick". This is refering to the magic in the night

  4. The poems title is significant because it draws attention to the rest of the poem. The title of the poem is describing the actions of the fireflies. The title relates to the speaker.

The lights in the poem are represented by the fireflies. This is significant because it links to the title of the poem. The title of the poem collects the ideas in the poem.

In the poem the mother who is the speaker relates her life to the fireflies. The title of the poem is emphasized by this relation to the fireflies. The flickering of the light is mentioned a few times in the poem because it relates to the title which makes it significant.

  5. quote for Ed's response:

"'I think they are connected with magic,' she says, / peering into the darkness. 'Maybe people around here tell stories / about small bits of magic that appear on summer nights.'" (lines 7-9)

  6. The title "They are Silent and Quick" is referring to the fireflies and how their light flickering is like the spirits of her Native American ancestors. This is significant because she is sad at first when she must leave her home, but when she wakes up in the night seeing the light of the fireflies show a new beginning along with the spirit inside her.

  9. "They are Silent and Quick" is the title of the poem. The title refers to the fireflies the narrator talks about in the poem. The light the fireflies create like Ed said, "hope". It is like the "light at the end of the tunnel" for the narrator showing that her life will get better.

  10. The Title of the Native American Poem "They are Silent and Quick" refers to the fireflies. Fireflies in this poem are a symbol of hope and also a symbol for the future. it demonstrates the idea of a new tommorow or a new beginning. in a land of darkness where this woman and child live there is nothing connected to their culture. But this woman discovers hope from the fireflies and feels better about their situation.

  11. The title of "The Minister's Black Veil" draws attention, of course, to the minister's dark (both physically and emotionally) veil in the story. It also draws attention to the mysterious, spooky mood of the tale.
