Jasmin Martin I find the story very interesting and ironic. It is ironic because the minister to the church is carrying around a secret sin. One may think that even the closest people to God could never sin, or doesn't. However, in this case, the minister has a secret that even his finacee doesn't know. Also, it is most interesting to me because of the symbolism from the veil. The veil represents the carried baggage, or guilt that he feels, but the way that Hawthorne describes the veil is very important/significant to me.
The aspect of this story that I found most intriguing was the Father Hooper’s persistence to his self-proclaimed “noble cause,” which ended up ruining his acceptance in society, and all chances of any happiness. Through the combination of both the presence of the black veil, and the cloud of mystery surrounding it, the mere sight of Father Hooper brought fear and dread into many of the town’s people. Although, he still persisted on in his quest to righteousness. But, what surprised me the concerning his rejection was the decision that he made concerning his wife. They were so deeply fond of each other, and she warned him of the social implications that were accompanied with this black veil. She then told him she would have to leave him because of it, while giving him the ultimatum of removing the veil to keep his bride. While it pained him greatly to do so, he told her that he was bound to wear it for all of his mortal life, giving her no choice but to leave him behind. This made his life painfully miserable, but he would never go back on his choice. He chose to live a life of rejection and solitude.
What I found interesting in the story "The Ministers Black Veil" was that the minister wore an actual veil to represent his shame. It was interesting because the minister used an object to symbolize his wrong doings instead of expressing it through his actions.
Something else I found interesting about the story is the minister is represented as a person who has no wrong doings but actually did something wrong.
I think it was really interesting how he chose to keep a veil hiding his face for the rest of his life after he commits adultry. I think it's a really different, but interesting way to show remorse for his mistake and attempt to prove to God, himself, and Elizabeth how ashamed he is. I liked that he stuck to his word and actually wore it over his face until the day he died, even after Elizabeth left him. -Sammi
The story has an ominous and creepy feeling to it. Granted that most of the story is just the minister denying people an answer to his strange behavior, the fact taht he had a veil for a single sin is very scary. It makes the reader think how bad the sin was that the minister had commited. Regardless in the end the viel does not mean what many people believe,a sin, but rather a metaphor to how people all have black veils that cover their secrets. this was the only bad thing about the story because i was expecting a major issue or sin but rather a simple metaphor that most people took as misleading and stupid.
I found the most interesting scene in the story to be when the minister led the wedding ceremony. With the help of the veil he manages to continue the sense of gloom and despair even though a wedding should be a joyous occasion. I found this interesting because it seemed that in his darknening of the wedding, the minister was suggesting the futility of marriage, and how the "secret sin" he repeatedly mentions pervades even marriage, believed to be the most holy of ceremonies in Christianity.
I found the immense reactions to such a small thing, the black veil over the mans face, very interesting. It is interesting how such a tiny thing can send a whole community into uproar.
The fact that the veil was a symbol for the crime of commiting a horrible sin, adultury, was extremely interesting to me. The fact that he feels that he needs to hide his face with a veil because he is so ashemed is so creative to me. Also the fact that its black, like someone in mournig would wear, is extremely intersting because it also is the color of evil. He uses it like sign to show how much he is ashamed of himself for doing such a horrible thing and trying to prove to God he will never do it again.
I find it really interesting that Hooper chose to wear a veil over his face for his entire life after he commits adultry. I think it's a really interesting way to show remorse and with the veil on he is constantly reminded of his mistake.
I also liked that he stuck to his word and actually kept it on for the rest of his life. Until the day he died and even on his deathbed when people attempted to take the veil off, he clung onto it and refused to remove it. Even after Elizabeth left him, he continued to wear it which i also thought was really interesting and prooved that he truley felt awful about it. -Sammi

I think the most interesting piece was how no one could find it even though it was the talk of the town. Also there were a lot of rumors which kept it going because I wanted to figure out if one of them was actually true. Also it made the people think in the town what could be the reason and he always had a plan from the beginning. We figure that out because he wants people to commit their sins and there imperfections. It is great because he proves a lesson to everybody because if you like something just wear it and feel good about it.
One thing that i enjoyed was learning about Nathaniel Hawthorne before we read this story. This is because this helped me to understand where Hawthorne got his inspiration for the story. I could relate in this story all of the darkness and symbolism that appeared in the novel. I also loved the lesson or allegory that it is supposed to teach you in the end. And actually the significance of the Veil can teach a person a lot of things. One thing is that you should be understanding of yourself and of others and to be more true to who you are. Also that you should be less judgemental of others. I thought that the messege from this story was a very powerful one.
What I liked about this story was how much Mystery was behind the whole veil. Why is the minister wearing this? Why wont he remove it? Just all the mystery behind the meaning of the veil and the importantance of the veil to Minister Hooper
I liked how the whole story had a dark and ominous feel to it. The veil confused the towns people, and caused a lot of confusion. It was interesting how the whole story was based around a simple veil, even though a veil in itself is not very significant in any way. It was just that the context that it was used in was very creative.
When you're assigned a blog post I'm looking for depth of insight and engagement with the text or whatever topic we're exploring.
Insight doesn't mean you have to know everything, and often there may not be a "right" answer, it just means that you're delving beneath the surface, making connections, asking good questions, and pulling pieces (quotes and examples) from the text to support your ideas.
I also want you to read and respond to your peers' posts. Think of it as a collaboration and try not to simply repeat what others say but to reinforce, question, and expand on ideas.
Finally, do your best with spelling and grammar, but don't stress about it- the blog is less formal- I want the ideas to flow!
**Don't forget to sign your first name at the end of your post so you can get credit for your amazing ideas!
