MBV: Relevance

Is "The Minister's Black Veil" still relevant today? Why or why not?

  1. It is not relevance today actually because in the end it is a symbol for this man who had it that lived and ided with it. Also it is still not relevance today because it was just with this old man and everybody had rumors to figured out what has happened to it. No one seemed to find it because when he died he put it on top of his mouldering body and hid it so no one could find it. Also all the people talked about in the town because it was such a discussion and no one could take it from him. Also he did not give any details because it he wanted to be a secret that was in his family.

  2. "The Minister's Black Veil" is still relevant today because the veil in the story represents people hiding who they really are. This is relevant because people everywhere hide behind false identities today. In some ways, the story can be related to "Catcher in the Rye," and how so many people are "phonies."

  3. This story is still relevant because people are still hiding their identity. People are always committing sins and lieing about doing them. Whether it is from stealing a piece of candy or committing murder. People are always lieing bout being part of something that is not a good thing to do. No one the story is perfect and no one in real life is perfect and no one ever will be perfect.

  4. “The Minister’s Black Veil” is a timeless story of the rejection that people face when they steer away from the crowd and the wills of society. Even today, when people choose to deviate from societal norms, they face rejection, misery, and possible humiliation. People are still people, and they are not willing to expand themselves to accommodate people who they believe to be bizarre. Many are still unfortunately still unable to open up their minds beyond what they are accustomed to and comfortable with to people with different customs, beliefs, or of a different viewpoint. This can be seen today with those prejudiced against people of different faiths, and even those who choose to become transgendered. Even though these people may not be out to prove something powerful or symbolic with their decisions, they should none the less be free of ridicule and rejection in society, and able to achieve life happiness.

  5. The message behind "The Minister's Black Veil" is definately still relevant in the 21st century, even more so than it was in the time period it was set in. It carried the general theme of people committing "secret sins" that build up to create metaphorical black veils with which people hide the truth behind. Today this metaphorical hiding of one's secrets has been made possible through technology. With the internet people are able to hide and lie with an ease uncomprehendable by the puritan community of "The Minister's Black Veil." People can create aliases and masks to hide behind through the internet, and make lies even more believable. However, everybody knows this. potential technology has. Because of this people today are always questioning everything from the news to the latest facebook post. We still are all hiding behind our own black veils, but as time passes they are becoming even easier to hide behind and harder to notice.

  6. I feel that this story is still very relevant to today. The veil is a symbol for sin, and no matter what you do you live with the sin you have commited. Not only do you live with the sin you commit forever, but you die with that sin. Everyone sins and every lives with sin every single day, and Mr. Hooper just made it more literal by wearing a black veile every day till the day he died to show everyone he commited sin and he is ashamed for what he did, but he can never take it back. Sin is there forever, the veil was never taken off.

  7. This story is and will be relevent, it would seem, forever. The story represents very common problems in today's society. It represents problems of judgement, sin, and guilt. It is also trying to teach a messege to anyone who reads the story. That in general people shouldn't judge others until they truly understand them. One could see how it would be odd to wear a black veil around your head as your giving a sermon and to never mention it. However it is not fair to judge unless you know what has been affecting them. The veil was a tool that the minister used to teach others about themself. So it is obvious that this story still has relevence today.

  8. This story is still relevant today because the subject of sin is still relevant. There are still lots of sinners in the world and someone could do something like wearing a black veil and people would be shocked in the same way. Marking himself as a sinner is still relevant.

  9. In modern day society, The ideology of "The Ministers Black Veil" is still applied today. People although try to be honest still make mistakes. some mistakes ar emore serious than others and are then confined to secrecy based on that sin. regardless people do no not walk around with black veils on their faces but rather just lie and move on with their lives.
