“He had on a dress suit and patent leather shoes, and I couldn’t keep my eyes off him…”(36)
ReplyDeleteIn this comment Myrtle is telling about her first encounter with Tom, her present lover. Here we see what it is that first attracted him to her—his fancy dress. Such clothes generally mark a man who has status and power, with which subsequently comes wealth. At the time of this encounter, Myrtle was already unhappily married to George. He was a working class man who couldn’t offer Myrtle many material things. This did not please Myrtle. She is a superficial woman who believes heavily in consumerism. From this Myrtle justifies her love affair with Tom. She describes how her present husband George fooled her into believing he was such a man; how he was a gentleman like Tom. She then later realized that he merely made himself appear as such, and that she was fooled. This angers Myrtle, and fuels her continue this affair.
