"The one on my right was a colossal affair by an standard-it wwas a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden."(5)
ReplyDeleteThis quote gives us possibly some background information about Gatsby. By the type of architecture that was used in his house, it leads the readers to believe that he is intrested in European architecture. Also that his mansion is forty acres of lawn and gardens it seems that he enjoys being outside rather then being inside of his home.

"Something in his leisurely movements and the secure postion of his feet upon the lawn suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself..." (20)
ReplyDeleteNick notices that this man he sees is Gatsby right away and points out the fact that his motions are leisurely yet secure. Identifying Gatsby by these traits could suggest that Gatsby has a relaxed and calm personality but is a positive, confident, and maybe assertive man.
- Mike Ludwig
“If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away. “ (6)
ReplyDeleteThis quote is showing how the narrator believes Gatsby is one of the most luckiest people he could have met. It foreshadows upcoming evernts to come to prove exactly what the narrator means by this, for we dont know much about this guy and for the narrator to come up with this statement. He believes that everything works out for this man for some reason and he relates it to an earthquake detector because the narrator belives that he is so lucky because he knows whats going to happen so he is cunning.

“Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a green single light, minute and far away, that might have been at the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness.” [Page 26]
ReplyDeleteThe quote explains that while looking out towards the sea, Nick sees a mysterious green light in the distance towards the end of the dock. Thinking it could be Gatsby, he looks for him again but finds that Gatsby has already left, leaving Nick confused and alone in the quiet darkness. This quote in the story shows possible foreshadow about this mysterious light that Nick knows nothing about. The green light makes Gatsby seem even more mysterious and leaves Nick questioning what exactly the light is and where he disappears too. -Sammi
Quote:
ReplyDelete“Really? I was down there at a party about a month ago. Ata man named Gatsby’s. Do you know him?”
“I live next door to him.”
“Well, they say he’s a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm’s. That’s where all his money comes from.”
“Really?”
She nodded.
“I’m scared of him. I’d hate to have him get anything on me.”
(Page 32)
Gatsby is said to have descended from the great Kaiser Wilhelm who was a German emperor from 1861 to 1868. This would mean that Gatsby has a German background. Gatsby may also have a like for power and money seeing as he owns a mansion and seems to be a powerful man. I also believe that Gatsby could have potential power because of my quote. This is when Sister Catherine says that she is afraid of him and would not want Gatsby to have anything against her. The way that the F. Scott Fitzgerald talks about Gatsby is very limited and gives him a mysterious aurora. So far in the book I have no idea whether this man is a good man. Maybe he is a tyrant character who loves power. These guesses are going off of the quotes given in the book about Gatsby. There are many different possibilities for what kind of man he is, the possibilities are endless. This is how i am viewing Gatsby at this point in the novel.
