Imagery & Symbols

What stand out as vibrant imagery (mental pictures / sensory details) and symbols in the poem?

Give at least one quote and discuss it.

How do the images / symbols contribute to the poem's meaning?

  1. Imagery is created when the author, Luci Tapahonso, described the fireflies and the insects outside that were buzzing around. Also, when describing the night environment, the author uses imagery and I was able to invision the scene. "We sit outside on the deck and below, tiny flickers of light appear here and there. They are silent adn quick. The night is thick and the air is alive with buzzing and humming insects." This quote sets the scene for the poem. It lets the audience know that they are outside and there are little creatures flying around in the air. The insects ended up being fireflies that brought peace and comfort to the mother and daughter.

  2. The imagery in the poem contributes to the meaning because it brings the poem all together. At first the poem was set up with images that set the scene and then the author created a sense of fear because of strange noise. In the end, the fireflies brought a sense of safety and harmony rather than fear and discomfort

  3. One quotes is "I never heard of such a thing. There's nothing like the Navajo stories" and this means that they are remembering the past and there old songs they sang because her daughter was homesick. I see all of thepeople huddling around the ifre and someone teelling the tale and hearing those drums in the background due to the teens screaming near them. This contribute's to the poem meaning because it is all about 3 generations of native americans and sharing their expierence and what they know to each other. Some sybols are banging the drums and everybody danceing and screaming and all having a great time together and that is what they miss about there past. As well as she is aching due to rhe asong because there are no words to describe the feeling because you just have to be there and see it for yourself and she remebers the feeling too whens she hears the ruckus in the woods all alone. Also theforest is one two because in the Native Americans tribes they were usall in the woods and cut off from civilization is another image and just looking up at the sky.

  4. One symbol in this poem are the fireflies or the lights. At the beginning of the poem the fireflies are introduced as "maical". Torwards the end of the poem they are talked about how they put an end to a gray dawn. These fireflies are used as a symbol of hope and relief. The light brings an end to a gray dawn, or an end to problems and the also light up the dark night.

  5. What stands out for imagery in this poem is how she descirbes the settting of the night while her and her daughter sit there in the magesticness of the fireflies. The fireflies are a huge symbol in this poem for many different things. "And now, as I watch these tiny bodies of light, the aching inside lessens as i see how the magic of these lights precedes the gray dawn" The speaker is saying how the pain inside of her is lessened because her mother once said that when you go out into the "gray dawn before sunrise to reciece the blessing of gentle spirits who gather around our home" and when she went outside, there were the fireflys, symbolizing the spirits that protect her home. In the end, the speaker becomes less home sick and realizes that these sprits will always be there with her being a reminder that you can never leave home, because home is always with you.

  6. "'I think they are connected with magic,' she says, peering into the darkness"
The fireflies are represent the magic of nature. They create light which mezmerizes the narrator's daughter. They also represent how powerful nature can be by creating beautiful sights. This poems shows the beuty and power of nature.

  7. The most prominent imagery in this poem is the over whelming depression and weight that the mother feels. When she says "I wonder how i will get throguh aother day" give the image of a very large weight on her sholder and brings up the image of a tired mother with her sholders slumped and feet dragging. The symbols of the firefly sybolizes the light in the dark abyss that is the night.

  10. There is imagery all throughout this poem and is what gives the reader the feeling that you are truely there. It brings you to a whole new realm of vivid descriptions and places that make the story so good. Right from the beggining you get a vivid about description about fireflies. Something that one would think would be so boring yet the author Luci Tapahonso, makes it interesting. "The night is thick and the air is alive with bizzing and humming insects. 'They're lightning bugs,' Lori says. 'Fireflies'." Also the words used at the end are a good examples of symbolism. "There are no English words to describe this feeling. 'Taa iighisii biniihaa shil hoyee' I say." Using another language efficiently shows that the sentiments they are feeling are so strong that they can only translate it into their language. This author does an excellent job to use examples of imagery and symbols in her work.
